Abstract

A non-migratory aqueous glass-fibre sizing composition comprises water, lubricant, textile softener, and a mixture of 45-55% by weight high-amylose starch (a) and 45-55% of water-repellent low-amylose starch (b). Starch (a) contains 50-60% amylose by weight, and may be e.g. potato or hybrid maize starch; it may also contain amylopectin. Starch (b) contains 20-30% amylose, and may be corn starch; it may be cross-linked, e.g. by POCl3. The starches are mixed with water and cooked, the components (a) and (b) being mixed together before, during or after these processes. The composition may also include plasticizing film-forming material, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol or polyethylene glycol; wetting agents, e.g. an ethylene oxid derivative of a sorbitol ester; processing oil, e.g. hydrogenated vegetable oil; and fungicides, e.g. an organo-metallic compound. The size is applied to glass filaments emerging from a glass-melting furnace before they are wound on a rotating forming tube.
