Abstract

Crude iron with or without scrap is refined at 1600-1800 DEG C. into steel by blowing oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas through a water-cooled blowing tube 1 of a blowing device constructed as shown (see Division F4) on to the melt in a converter or crucible and supplying admixtures, e.g. powdered coke, coal, tar, Fe, Si, Mn, Al or alloys thereof with or without gaseous combustible mixtures and/or slag forming agents, through an inner tube 4 concentrically arranged inside the blowing tube. The inner tube may be provided with an injector device (not shown) supplied with gas, preferably oxygen, or steam, to adjust the pressure at the mouth 6 to equal or be less than the blowing pressure in the annular space 5 and preferably lower than atmospheric pressure.
