Abstract

1,017,415. Lubricating systems. REDEX Ltd. Feb. 6, 1964 [Feb. 6, 1963], No. 4905/63. Heading F2A. Apparatus for controlling the flow of uppercylinder lubricant from a reservoir 16 (Fig. 1, not shown), to the inlet manifold 12 of an I.C. engine comprises a cylindrical body 32 (Fig. 2, not shown) containing a flow-regulating valve controlled by a rotatable knob 24 (Fig. 3) and an air-control valve operated by a pushbutton 51. Lubricant is drawn from the reservoir through flexible tubing attached to a connector 23 by suction communicated from the manifold through flexible tubing attached to a connector 22. Atmospheric air drawn through a duct 54 is admixed with lubricant as it enters the apparatus, the mixture flowing through passages 42, 41, 36, 35, 34, 33, 31, 29 in body 32 to connector 22 and thence to the manifold. The flow-regulating valve comprises a conical member 28 mating with a valve-seat on connector 22 and attached to a screwthreaded shaft 25 carrying knob 24. The aircontrol valve comprises an 0-ring 53 which is movable between conical seatings 45, 46 and attached to an axially-slidable shaft 48 carrying push-button 51, the valve being biased to an open position by a compression spring 49. The push-button is depressed to close duct 54 when it is necessary to increase the flow of lubricant to the manifold, e.g. when the engine is started. Passage 36 is defined by an arcuate channel in body 32 and a disc (not shown) mounted on the adjacent end face of the body, passage 34 being defined in a similar manner. To provide a visible indication of the rate of flow of lubricant a flow-restricting pin 56 is lodged in passage 36, and the disc associated with this passage is made of transparent material, the rate of flow being represented by the quantity of lubricant on the downstream side of the pin.
