Abstract

1,017,730. Cutting webs. BONDED STRUCTURES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1964 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 2270/64. Heading B4B. Apparatus for cutting a web 3 to which lines of adhesive 4 have been applied comprises two sensing elements 1, 2 having their sensing points at 11, 12, the signals from the sensing elements being alternately selected by an electronic gating circuit 5 and fed to a digital counter 6. After a number of signals predetermined by the setting of a length setting switch 13 has been received by the counter, the output of the counter initiates the operation of a cutting device 7. At the same time, a signal is sent to the gating circuit so as to switch the counter to receive signals from the other sensing element. After the same number of signals from this element, the cutting device 7 is again initiated, a signal is sent to the gating circuit 5 to switch the counter to receive signals from the first sensing element and the sequence of operations repeated. Preferably, a signal from the counter, initiated after receipt of a lesser number of signals determined by the setting of a length setting switch 13, switches in a resistance 10 to reduce the power supplied to an electric motor which drives the pair of feed rollers 8, 81, thus reducing the speed of the web to the sensing elements. On receipt of the greater number of signals corresponding to the desired length of the cut sheet, a further signal from the counter switches out the resistance 10 after effecting cutting of the web. The cut sheets are conveyed away by a pair of rollers 9, 91 and stacked. The edges of the cut sheets may be aligned manually or by means of a joggle box. The stack of cut sheets in which all of the lines of adhesive are parallel may be caused to adhere together and be cut through to form a slice which can then be opened out to form a honeycomb structure.
