Abstract

1,020,448. Condensing steam in power plants. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 19, 1963 [April 19, 1962], No. 15190/62. Heading B1B. In a steam turbine plant, the warm water flowing out of direct-contact condenser 19, Fig. 2, passes down pipe 20 into tank 21 and is then transferred by pump 25 through pipe 27 to radiators 11, 12, wherein the water is cooled by air flowing over the radiators; the cooled water is then passed through pipe 29 to a set of sprays 28 in the condenser. The condenser is maintained under vacuum by suction-pipe 23, and the pressure in tank 21 is maintained the same as that in the condenser by pipe 22. The cooled water is driven through pipe 29 by a small hydraulic propellertype turbine 30 which assists electric motor 26 to drive pump 25. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, boiler 18, steam turbine 16, condenser 19 and tank 21 are arranged within a dry cooling tower 10; and there are six circumferential groups of radiators (not shown). The tank 21 has six drain pipes 24 each of which is connected to the suction side of a pump 25, the exhaust side of each pump being connected through a pipe 27 to the inlet manifold pipe 13 of one group of radiators. The outlet manifold pipe 14 of each group of radiators is connected by a pipe 29 to a set of sprays in the condenser. One or more of the radiator groups may be emptied while the turbine is running by shutting off the corresponding pump 25, whereupon the water in radiator 11 and pipe 27 drains into tank 21, while that in radiator 12 and pipe 29 drains to the tank through non- return valve 33 and pipe 27. The tank has a large enough capacity to take all the water in the system, if necessary. A modified system is described wherein the tank is open to the atmosphere.
