Abstract

Polymers of an N-vinyl lactam of the general formula: where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive and n is 2,3, or 4 are made by effecting the polymerization of the lactams in the presence of a hydride or borohydride of an alkali metal and optionally an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or an oxide hydroxide, or alkoxide thereof. The lactam may be N-vinyl pyrrolidone which is exemplified, N-vinyl pyrrolidinone or piperidone, or caprolactam, or a substitution product of these compounds. The polymerization may be effected in bulk, a hydrocarbon solvent or diluent, or in aqueous media, and is preferably conducted at elevated temperature.
