Abstract
1,044,060. Feeding webs. WEAN ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Sept. 30, 1964 [Feb. 26. 1964], No. 39880/64. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G1] In a continuous strip processing line the leading end of a new strip (e.g. of metal) is aligned with the trailing edge of a preceding strip (e.g. prior to welding the two) by comparing the transverse positions of the strips and using the error signal to reposition the new strip. The transverse position of the preceding strip, S, Fig. 2, is measured by arranging two sensors 14 so that one or the other is actuated as the strip moves to the right or the left, the signal obtained being amplified at 33, and used to operate an hydraulic system 28 to shift the table 15 which carries the sensors 14, thus maintaining the strip S centrally located relatively to the sensors. The position of the table is continuously measured at 27 and compared in an amplifier 36, Fig. 3 (not shown), with the transverse position, similarly measured at 56, of a table 49 carrying positioning guides 12 for the new strip. The resultant error signal operates an hydraulic system 51 to reposition the table 49. Any variation in width of the preceding strip, S, Fig. 2, operates both sensors 14 and no output is obtained from the amplifier 33, but a further sensor 14a (not visible in the Figs.) located adjacent the right-hand sensor 14 drives an amplifier 21 and a motor 20, which rotates a threaded rod 17 and moves the sensors 14 either nearer together or further apart. This equal and opposite movement of the sensors ensures that variations in width of the strip do not affect the measurement of its transverse position. The separation of the guides 12 (Fig. 3, not shown), for the new strip, is controlled by a handle 43 which rotates a threaded rod carrying a captive nut 42 and thus shifts a cylinder 40 with its associated piston 39 to move the guides nearer together or further apart. Variations in width of the new strip are accommodated by movement of the piston 39.
