Abstract
1,044,412. Data transmission. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC AND ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 8, 1964], No. 5107/65. Heading H4P. To prevent a self-clocking receiver from slipping out of phase consequent upon the reception of a long series of like bits, the transmitter includes coding means for ensuring that such a series does not occur in the transmitted signal, and the receiver includes corresponding decoding means. The received pulses, after demodulation, pass to a sampling circuit. The sampling clock pulses are derived from the bit transitions in the received data by way of a tuned filter. The coding means at the transmitter is designed to translate the input data to a form containing no series of like pulses longer than the decay time of the tuned filter, and comprises modulo-2 adders and a number of delay circuits. In the case of the coding circuit itself generating a series of like pulses a counter, having counted thirty such pulses, causes the last-transmitted pulse to be inverted and retransmitted, i.e. a bit transition is provided, whereby the receiver can be maintained in phase. Following the sampling circuit at the receiver, circuitry similar to that at the transmitter decodes the data to develop a data train identical to the transmitter input.
