Abstract

A bipolar electrode, e.g. for use in electrolysing sea-water or brine to produce Cl2 or hypochlorite, comprises two metal sheets 12, Fig. 4, separated by a plate 14 of electrically insulating material, the insulating plate extending outwardly beyond the edges of the metal sheets and the metal sheets being electrically interconnected at one or more points spaced from their edges by one or more metal connections 15 extending through one or more apertures in the insulating plate. The metal sheets 12 may be of Ti, Ni, Ni alloy, Rh or Ru and the sheet forming the anode face may be coated with Pt; alternatively the sheets 12 may be of Pt. Connection 15 may be of the same metal as the sheets. The insulating plate 14 may be of an acrylic resin, polypropylene, polytetrafluorethylene or an ion-selectively permeable material. The metal sheets may be circular, rectangular or square. The electrodes are provided with disc spacers 17 so that a series of bipolar electrodes can be bolted together with unipolar end electrodes to form a stack. Each end electrode may comprise a single metal sheet 19, Fig. 6, e.g. of Ti, a plate 21 of insulating material, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, and a terminal which as shown comprises a projecting strip 24 but which may extend centrally through the plate 21. The stack may be used in either an open or closed cell. When used in an open cell, electrolyte circulates between the electrodes as soon as the current is switched on. The stack may be mounted in any position within the cell either with the electrodes vertical or horizontal or at an angle.
