Abstract
1,048,853. Rotary filter; hydrocyclones. CANADIAN INGERSOLL-RAND CO. Ltd. March 17, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 11276/65. Headings B1D and B2P. Liquid with entrained solids enters a housing 16 by a tangential inlet 58 (Fig. 4, not shown), impinges on paddles 54 so as to cause a generally cylindrical strainer 24 to rotate, and subsequently descends in housing 16 in a cyclonic flow, whereby heavy solids are deposited on and fall down wall 20 while liquid passes inwards through strainer 24 and leaves by outlet 62. Lighter solids are deposited on strainer 24, but are removed centrifugally therefrom by the rotation. An outlet (60) (Fig. 1A, not shown) is situated at the bottom of the housing 16 for removal of deposited solids. The strainer 24 may be cylindrical, frusto-conical (Fig. 6, not shown) or of polygonal cross-section, and is mounted on a shaft 32, which is carried in upper and lower bearings 36, (42). Lower bearing (42) (Fig. 1A) has an adjusting screw (44), which lifts the strainer and paddle assembly and varies the gap in upper labyrinth seal 46. The lower end of shaft 32 may be supported on an electric, pneumatic or mechanical, sonic or ultra-sonic frequency, vibrator (Fig. 7, not shown) to keep strainer 24 free of deposited solids.
