Abstract
1,051,526. Shearing; rolling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. April 15, 1965 [April 16, 1964], No. 16199/65. Headings B3M and B3W. An apparatus for removing the off-gauge front and back end portions of a rod emerging from a rolling mill comprises a first shear 20 for cropping the front end and a scrap shear 22 for chopping the front end into short lengths: a second shear 24 for cropping the back end and a scrap shear 26 for chopping the back end into short lengths. Guide pipes are provided to lead the rod to the shears and then to a coiling unit 16, and there are further guide pipes to lead the cropped ends to the scrap shears. The product of the scrap shears is removed by conveyers 68 and 94. Construction of cropping shears, Fig. 3 (not shown).-A base 36 has upper faces 38 and 40 each sloping at 45 degrees. On the face 40 is mounted a rotatable disc shear 42. On the face 38 is mounted a pneumatically operated actuator 44 which deflects a guide for the rod from a position 48 to 48a. Operation of shear.-Rod issuing from the mill passes through a guide 46 into the movable guide 48 and hence into a guide 56 leading to the rotary drum scrap shear 62. When the off-gauge portion has passed the actuator 44 is operated so that the guide 48 moves the rod through the bight of the cutters and into alignment with the guide 54. The acceptable portion of the rod passes along this guide to a further pivoted guide 74, Fig. 4 (not shown), associated with the shear 24. and hence to a guide 84 leading to the coiler 16. When the off-gauge back end portion of the rod reaches the shear 24 the actuator 76 is operated to move the rod through the cutters and align the freshly-sheared leading end of the back end portion with a guide 86 which leads to a second drum type shear 88 which cuts the back end portion into short lengths.
