Abstract
1,053,695. Riveting; punching. FRUEHAUF CORPORATION. June 16, 1965, No. 25530/65. Headings B3U and B3W. Two metallic members 74, 76 are joined together by a plurality of integral rivet connections by applying a force to the members through a set of punches 16 while the members are backed by a unit having alternately arranged dies 70 and anvils 64, the dies 70 being aligned with the punches 16 so that a slug 78 is expelled from the lower member 74 and material from the upper member 76 is extruded through the hole in the lower member 74; moving the unit so that the anvils 64 are aligned with the punches 16 and lowering the punches 16 so that the anvils 64 spread the extruded material 82 beyond the peripheries of the holes formed in the lower member 74. The anvils 64 have convex shaped top surfaces 66 and are formed with a central hole 63 so that the points 20 of the punches 16 do not pierce through the extruded portion 82. The die and anvil unit is mounted in a frame 60 which is carried by a base plate (not shown) which can slide horizontally, in guides under the action of a hydraulic piston and cylinder unit, stops being provided at the ends of the guides to define the two positions of the die and anvil unit.
