Abstract

A ball winding machine having a plurality of winding spindles has a corresponding number of gripper devices mounted in a carriage which is adapted to move so as to doff and raise the completed balls and to drop them into a conveyor which runs the length of the machine. Balls (10) (Fig. 2, not shown), of thread are wound by means of a winding blade 4a on spindles (9) which rotate about their own axes and also oscillate about a horizontal axis (8). A carriage comprising members (13), (14), (15), (17) rides in channels (11) in the end walls of the machine and may be raised and lowered by haul pulleys (21), the carriage supporting a series of grippers (16) having serrated blades (Figs. 4 and 4a, not shown) to grip and doff the wound balls (10). The channels (11) are curved at the upper end to cause the carriage to move into a vertical position in which the wound balls (10) are automatically released by the grippers and deposited in a conveyor (65). A thread extending to a wound ball and is operated by an electromagnet (57) and control cable (56). The spindle (9) upon which the ball is wound is of the expansible type (Figs. 2a, 2b, not shown) expansion and collapsing thereof being controlled by an eccentric (59).
