Abstract

1,061,082. Rolling. HILLE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1964 [Feb. 6, 1963], No. 4842/63. Heading B3M. In a rolling mill with two co-operating rolls the chocks of one roll are pivotally connected to the adjacent chocks of the other roll by pivot pins whose axes extend transversely of the rolls. Each upper chock 14 of a roll 10, Fig. 2, has recesses 30 and 32 in which are housed extensions 34 and 36 of a lower chock 18, pivot pins 38 pivotally connecting the chocks and supporting the chocks on the uprights 64, 66 of a housing 3. The pivot pins have coaxial portions 40, 42 and 44 and an eccentric portion 54 so that rotation of the pins raises or lowers the lower chock 18. The eccentric portions 54 are mounted in horizontally slidable blocks 58 which slide in the chock 18 to prevent the horizontal component of motion of the eccentric from moving the lower roll axially. Similar blocks 52 supporting the portions 44 of the pins allow axial adjustment of the rolls. Rotation of the pivot pins (Fig. 1, not shown) is by means of levers (68) which are rotated by movement of a trunnioned nut (70) on a driven screw (72). The rotation of the levers may alternatively be by means of worms at each end of the rolls co-operating with segmental pinions, the roll adjustments at each end of the rolls being independent in this instant. The pivot pins (Fig. 4, not shown) may alternatively be provided with coaxial portions (90) and (92) and eccentric portions (98) and (94), rotation of the pins effecting equal and opposite vertical movement of the chocks (80) and (82) so that the pass line remains fixed. Horizontal movements of the portions (92), (94) and (90) are accommodated by sliding blocks (106), (96) and (104). In a further embodiment pivot pins of the same configuration are used, each portion (98) being mounted in a sliding block while the portions (92) and (90) are accommodated simply in bores in the chock (80). The pivot pins, instead of being in one piece, may have eccentric sleeves mounted on a pin. The sliding blocks and the bores in which they slide may be treated with an anti-friction material, or may be provided with reservoirs of hydraulic fluid, or needle or roller bearings. The invention may be embodied in a 4 high mill, the chocks of the working rolls being mounted in supporting roll chocks which are pivotally supported.
