Abstract

1, 061, 282. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Oct. 18 1963 [Oct. 18, 1962], No.41349/63. Heading G1C. In gyroscopic apparatus having a rotor case 11 journalled in a supporting gimbal frame 13 for angular movement relative to the frame 13 about an axis 16, electrical current is led from the frame 13 to the rotor case 11 by means of a first set of contact members 46 carried by the gimbal frame 13 which are in contact each with one of a second set of contact members 50 carried by the rotor case 11, the contact members carried by the frame 13 being caused to go angular oscillations about the axis 16 relative to the frame 13 and to the set of contact members 50 to reduce friction. The rotor case 11 is mounted for rotation in bearings 20, 21 of the kind disclosed in Specification 835, 630 and each comprise an intermediate rotatable ball race 23, 31 respectively. The gimbal frame 13 is journalled in a housing 12 and carries a motor 35 which is periodically reversed by a timing device 38, and which oscillates the intermediate ball races 23, 31 through gearing 36, 37, the races 23, 31 being provided with flanges formed with gear teeth for this purpose. Electrical power is fed from a source to slip rings 39 carried by the frame 13 and thence through diametrically opposed sets of brushes 42, 42′, to slip rings 43 carried by an insulating disc 44 which forms the toothed flange of the intermediate race 23. The pressures exerted by the sets of brushes 42, 42′ balance each other so that no resultant torque is applied to the rotor casing 11. The contact members 46 are mounted on a pillar 45 integral with the disc 44. The intermediate races 23, 31 and the electrical contact members carried by the race 23 are preferably oscillated through more than one complete revolution in each direction, though oscillation through an angle less than 360 degrees may be employed, in which case the brushes 42, 42′ and slip rings 43 may be replaced by flexible leads. If desired, two sets of diametrically opposed contact members 46 may be provided.
