Abstract
Coloured copolymers are produced by reacting a copolymer of (a) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is capable of coupling and (b) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is incapable of coupling with an aqueous solution of a diazonium salt. Monomer (a) may be 3-acryloylaminophenol, 3 – acryloyl – 4 – methylphenol, 1 – dimethylamino – 3 – acryloylaminobenzene, N – ethyl – N – vinyloxyethylaniline, 1 – acryloyl – 5 – hydroxynaphthalene, 1 – acryloylamino – 7 – hydroxynaphthalene, 2 – acryloylamino – 5 – hydroxy – 7 – sulphonaphthalene, 2 – vinylsulphonyl – 7 – hydroxynaphthalene, 1-phenyl – 31 – acryloylaminopyrazolone – 5 or 1 – phenyl – 41 – acryloylaminopyrazolone – 5, or the corresponding methacryloyl derivatives of said acryloyl compounds. These monomers may be substituted with e.g. halogen atoms or alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy, acyl, acyloxy, hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxylic, sulphonic, nitro or cyano groups. Specified (b) monomers are styrene, butadiene, isoprene, acrylic, methacrylic and maleic acids, esters of said acids and alcohols containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene, chloride, vinyl methyl ether, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, maleic anhydride, vinylsulphonic acid, N-vinyl imidazole and N-vinylimidazolium methyl sulphate. The copolymer is prepared conventionally and then dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous medium or an organic solvent prior to reaction with the diazonium salt solution, which may be derived from aromatic amines such as aniline, the anisidines, toluidines, xylidines, haloanilines, nitroanilines, sulphanilic acids and anthranilic acids and analogous compounds of the 1-naphthylamine, 2-naphthylamine, 2-aminothiazole, 2-aminothiodiazole-(1,3,4), 3-aminotriazole – (1,2,4) and the aminobenzothiazole series. Diamino compounds are used to prepare bisazonium salts which effect cross-linking of the copolymer. The copolymers may also be cross-linked by incorporating (meth)acrylamide, N-methylol (meth)acrylamide or C1-C6 alkyl ethers of said methylol compounds, acrolein or allyl alcohol in the monomer mixture and then raising the pH of or heating the copolymer. Alternatively, aminoplast precondensates, dimethylol butanediol diurethane, formaldehyde, epoxy compounds or di- or polyisocyanates are added to the copolymer containing said cross-linking monomers. Ester or anhydride groups in the copolymer may be hydrolysed prior to cross-linking. In the example, (a) 3-acryloylaminophenol and (b) ethyl acrylate are polymerized with the N-butyl ether of N-methylol methacrylamide in an n-butyl acetate/ethylene glycol monomethyl ether solution using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst. The polymer is precipitated with ethyl acetate and dissolved in water. NaOH is added to the solution prior to reaction with diazotized 1-aminonaphthalene-4-sulphonic acid.
