Abstract

Heading F1F In a rotary pump of the meshing-screw type, which has a pair of screws (7, 8) Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown), with threads of non-uniform pitch, the rate of liquid displacement depends upon the position of a movable sleeve-element (13) relative to a fixed sleeve-element (11) situated adjacent an outlet (10) for the liquid. The pitch of the threads is diminished progressively towards the ends of the screws which lie adjacent an inlet (9) for the liquid, and to minimize cavitation in the liquid the axial length of the element (11) is such that it spans a minimum number e.g. two, of thread-pitches necessary to effect a pumping action when said element lies adjacent the inlet (9). The fixed element (11) serves to virtually augment the axial length of the element (13) when the latter lies adjacent thereto, so as to ensure a pumping action, owing to the greater threadpitch at the output end of the screws. The element (13) is moved by rotation e.g. manually, of a wheel (22) on a screw-threaded rod (21), which engages with a nut at one end of a further rod (14) whose other end is attached to said element. The rod (14) carries a piston (18) which is lodged in a cylinder (19) connected at one end to the high-pressure side (H) of the pump through a bore (34) containing the rod (14) and at the other end to the low-pressure side (L) of the pump through a pipe (35) so as to minimize the axial force required to move the element (13). A pressure-relief aperture or «weep hole» (23) is provided in the element (11) to prevent damage due to liquid being trapped between the elements. Noise due to cavitation in spaces or chambers defined by the portions of the threads lying within the element (13) may be minimized by a spooltype valve-member (29), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), lodged in the rod (14) which is moved to allow liquid to flow back from the high-pressure side of the element (13) into said chambers when the element is situated at the inlet end of the screws. Normally, the member (29) is held by a spring (32) in a position, according to Fig. 4, wherein it closes a pair of transverse passages (31) in a portion of the rod (14) lying on the high-pressure side of the element (13). When said element approaches the inlet end of the screws, the valve is moved against the action of the spring (32), to open the passages (31), by a plunger (30) abutting a portion of the casing (1). Liquid flowing from the passages (31) enters said spaces or chambers through a bore in the rod (14) wherein the member (29) is lodged, further transverse passages (33) in said rod, and a passage (26, 27) in said element. The pump may be modified to include either a single inlet and two outlets, or a single outlet and two inlets, as described in Specification 890, 507.
