Abstract
1,065,071. Endless belt conveyers. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Feb. 21, 1964 [Feb. 26, 1963], No. 7427/64. Heading B8A. A troughing idler assembly 10, as shown in Fig. 1, for an endless belt conveyer is suspended from wire rope side frame members 11, 12 and consists of a roller assembly 13 which comprises a centre roller 16 flanked by wing rollers 14, 15 supported by and swingable with respect to cradle frames 17, 18, slideways 32, 32a in end plates 22, 22a providing limited arcuate canting of shafts 30, 30a. The wing rollers 14, 15 taper uniformly from their inner to their outer ends at an angle of from 2 to 8 degrees. When the belt 36 moves in the direction of the solid arrow (Fig. 1) the wing rollers 14, 15 assume the full line positions in which they are canted forwardly in the direction of belt travel and have a training effect tending to centre the belt 36 on the assembly 10. When the belt 36 travels in the direction of the broken line arrow the wing rollers 14, 15 assume the broken line positions and thus still act to centre the belt 36. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a modification in which wing rollers 50, 51 are not tapered uniformly but are diametrically expanded over approximately a fifth of their length at their inner ends, indicated at 55. The embodiment shown in Fig. 3 is a fully flexible assembly 41 comprising a centre roller 41 flanked by tapered wing rollers 42, 43 connected to side ropes 11, 12 by link assemblies 45, 46 and hanger members 47, 47a. When the belt 36 is detrained to the right, as shown, wing roller 43 is dragged forward, pivot 48 allowing this, whereby the whole assembly 40 is swung counter-clockwise, introducing a centring effect on the belt. As the belt 36 moves back to a position substantially central the assembly 40 moves back to a position at right-angles to the direction of belt travel.
