Abstract

1,067,417. Measuring engine performance electrically. SOUTHERN GAS ASSOCIATION. May 17, 1965 [May 18, 1964; Dec. 21, 1964], No. 20858/65. Heading G1N. The performance of a reciprocating piston engine is monitored by obtaining the pressure/ volume relationship for each cylinder. The volume is obtained by coupling a resolver to the crank-shaft, the output being augmented by a second harmonic signal to relate the piston movement more accurately to the shaft rotation. As shown (Fig. 2), the crank-shaft is coupled via shaft 18 to a resolver 21a, and through a 2:1 gearing 20, 23 to a resolver 21b. The resolvers are mounted on a partition 26 fixed to a housing 12 which can be rotated by a knob 42 and gears 39, 40 to adjust the phase angle of the fundamental signal from resolver 21a. The stator of resolver 21b can also be rotated by a knob 31 to adjust the phase angle of the second harmonic signal relative to the fundamental. The phase angle of the fundamental is made zero when the piston is dead centre, and the phase angle of the. harmonic, and its relative amplitude, are obtained by calculation. The housing 12 also includes a lamp 34 and photocell 35 co-operating with a reflecting spot on disc 37 coupled to shaft 18 to produce one pulse per revolution of shaft 18, and a further pulse generator (not shown) produces one pulse per degree of revolution. Each resolver 21a 21b has two perpendicular rotor windings, one of which supplies the fundamental and second harmonic components of the volume signal (v = V sin #), and others supplying the components of the first differential of the volume signal (dv/dt=V cos #). The stator windings of the resolvers are fed with A. C., or D. C. when the output signals are also proportional to the speed N. To determine the power output of the engine the N dv/dt signal E 2 (Fig. 5) is multiplied at 60 by the N dv/dt signal E 2 (Fig. 5) is multiplied at 60 by a pressure signal from transducer 63, and the product integrated at 66 to give N#P dv/dt, ie power, and is indicated at 67. The volume and pressure signals may be fed to an oscilloscope 75 to show their relationship visually. The apparatus may also be used to determine the power lost in the suction lines and discharge lines, or the capacity of a compressor cylinder.
