Abstract
1,075,102. Automatic voltage control. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 11, 1963 Sept.11, 1962], No. 34735/62. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] An A. C. generator excitation system includes two rectifying means 16, 21 having their output circuits connected in parallel for supplying D. C. to the generator excitation winding 11, means for supplying the first rectifying means 16 with electric power derived directly from L. V. tappings 17 on the generator output winding 12 the tappings being so arranged that the voltage developed at them is suited to the excitation winding 11 without the need for voltage transformation when the generator develops its normal output voltage, and means for supplying the second rectifying means 21 with power derived from a secondary circuit of a current transformer 25 of which a primary circuit is associated with an output circuit 13 connected to the output winding 12 whereby under fault conditions the excitation winding 11 is supplied automatically from the output circuit; this maintains the fault current for a time sufficient for an overcurrent protective device to operate. As shown, the transformer secondary windings 24 are normally shorted by a 2-pole contactor 26 whose operating coil 27 is connected across the output circuit 13 whereby the fall in voltage consequent upon a fault drops out the contactor to permit energization of the second rectifier 21, and in modifications the contactor is replaced by anti-parallel siliconcontrolled rectifiers (29) Fig. 2, or a star-connected resistive load (31) Fig.3. The current transformer primary circuit alternatively may be on the alternator side of a circuit breaker 14 or is star point connections of the winding 12. The network 16 includes three silicon-controlled rectifiers 18 supplied by an automatic voltage regulator 20 arranged to effect closed-loop control of the alternator output voltage in accordance with a reference signal, and the system also includes a starting switch 23 which automatically opens when the output voltage has risen to half its desired value.
