Abstract

1,075,708. Sheathing by extrusion. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Nov. 3, 1964 [Nov. 7, 1963], No. 44703/64. Heading B5A. Sheathings for a cable (15), Fig. 4 (not shown), and a supporting strand (16) are simultaneously extruded together with an interconnecting web (19), the cable and supporting strand passing through core tubes 21 and 22, Fig. 3, respectively in die holder 10. To ensure that the die openings 27 and 32, Fig. 1, in main die member 26, Fig. 3, and auxiliary die member 30 respectively are concentric with cable 15 and strand 16, which are independently supported, the main die is provided with an adjustable face plate 35 which carries member 30 and has apertures 271, 49, Fig. 1, connected by a channel 51. In operation the main die 26, Fig. 3, face plate 35 and die holder 10 are secured to the extruder by jack screws (not shown) so that the die opening 27 and aperture 271, Fig. 1, are concentric with cable 15. If die opening 32 is not coaxial with strand 16 it is adjusted radially by rotation of an eccentrically mounted member 42 which passes through a slot 43 in die 30. If a circumferential movement of die 30 is necessary, screws 36 which secure face plate 35 and die members 26 and 30 to die head 10 and which pass through enlarged openings 37 are loosened, and main die 26 and plate 35 are rotated by rotation of a second eccentric actuator 52. Normally the offsetting of die openings 27, 271 due to this movement may be ignored. If finer adjustment is needed the whole of the adjustment procedure is repeated.
