Abstract
Esters of b -formyl propionic acid acetal are produced by reacting acetylene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen, more than 4 moles carbon monoxide being used per mole of acetylene and less than 1 mole of hydrogen being used per mole of carbon monoxide, in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl or a precursor thereof and more than 1 litre (measured at room temperature and atmospheric pressure) of an aliphatic alcohol containing up to 4 carbon atoms per mole of acetylene, at a carbon monoxide partial pressure of 50-500 kg./cm.2 and a temperature of 100-150 DEG C. The reactants may be first heated in these proportions and then contacted with cobalt carbonyl. The cobalt carbonyl may be in the form of a complex or cobalt-containing substances which provide carbonyls under the reaction conditions may be used, e.g. metallic cobalt, inorganic and organic cobalt salts. The alcohol used may be methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol. Aqueous alcohol may also be used. Examples describe the preparation of ethyl b -formyl propionate diethyl acetal and of methyl b -formyl propionate dimethyl acetal. By-products obtained in the examples are b -formyl ethyl propionate and b -formyl methyl propionate. Further by-products which may be obtained are alkyl propionates and alkyl succinates.
