Abstract

Cold-setting compositions are prepared by mixing bituminous materials with polyurethanes, which are sulphur-containing addition products with free isocyanate groups prepared from a polyhydroxyl compound containing thioether groups and an excess of a polyisocyanate. The polyurethane and tar-like materials are suitably used in a weight ratio of 7:3 to 3:7. Suitable polyisocyanates are toluylene diisocyanates, diphenylmethane-4,41-diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate whilst the preferred polyhydroxyl compounds containing thioether groups are polyethers and polyacetals derived from thiodiglycol, 3,31-dihydroxydipropyl sulphide, 4,41-dihydroxydibutyl sulphide, g ,g 1-dihydroxydipropyl disulphide and b ,b 1-dihydroxydiethyltetra- (trior di-) sulphide suitably in combination with polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, 1,2-propane diol, 1,3-propane diol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,6-hexane diol, di- or tri-ethylene glycol, butane – bis – (b – dihydroxyethylether), glycerol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol or mannitol. Reaction products of alkylene oxides with sodium polysulphide and/or hydrogen sulphide and sulphur may also be used as the polyhydroxyl compound. The ratio of NCO to OH groups in the formation of the polyurethane is suitably between 1.4:1 and 2.5:1. Suitable bituminous materials are asphalts, bitumens, bitumens aromatized by a cracking process and coal tar. Storable compositions may be produced from anhydrous tars which do not contain reactive hydrogen atoms and for this purpose the tars may be pre-treated with mono- or poly-functional isocyanates. The tars may also be mixed with plasticizing polymers such as styrene polymers, cumaroneindene polymers, synthetic and natural rubber polymers and partially condensed phenol resins. Solvents such as cyclohexanone, methyl cyclohexanone, aromatic hydrocarbons, ethylene glycol acetate and butyl acetate may be used in the formation of the composition. Pigments and fillers may be ground with the tar materials or with the polyurethane if anhydrous. Suitable fillers are carbon black, silica and asbestos fibres. Conventional polyurethane cross-linking agents may be added to optionally dissolved compositions, e.g. polyhydric alcohols and alkoxylation products thereof, diamines, ammonia, hydrazine, alkanolamines and mercaptoethanol. Water absorbing agents such as zeolites, calcium oxide, magnesium hydride, orthoformic acid esters, trichloro-triethyl phosphite, phosphorus pentoxide, aluminium alkoxides and isocyanates may also be added to the tar before the latter is mixed with the polyurethane.
