Abstract

Compounds of the general formula (wherein R1 represents a halogen atom or trifluoromethyl group, R2 represents a C1- 7 alkyl group, R3 represents a phenyl group which may carry a halo or trifluoromethyl substituent and the broken lines denote optional substituents) and their acid addition salts are prepared by intramolecularly condensing a compound of the formula (wherein R represents a hydroxy, C1- 7 alkoxy or aryloxy (aromatic) group), optionally followed by salt formation. Catalytic hydrogenation (palladium on charcoal) of 7-chloro-5-phenyl-1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-3H-benzdiaz[1,4]epinone-(3 effects dehalogenation. The above compounds may be converted to compounds of the general formula and their acid addition salts. Compounds of the first general formula and their salts are anticonvulsants and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them together with a carrier.
