Abstract
1,081,653. Cathode-ray tubes; travelling wave tubes. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. May 29, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 22352/64. Heading H1D. A travelling wave tube, e.g. an oscilloscope, has an electron beam deflecting system formed of a superconducting coaxial slow-wave line. The tube has an electron gun 1, Fig. 1, liquid helium cooled vertical deflecting system 3 horizontal scanning electrodes 8 and fluorescent screen 9, and also has liquid nitrogen shield vessels 10, 11 within the envelope 12. The envelope may be continuously evacuated through port 13; or the envelope may be hermetically sealed with an external cryostat contacting a metal envelope portion. The deflecting system has input and output coaxial lines 4, 5, and comprises in section a metal block 61, 62, 63, Fig. 2a, whose outer annular space 7 contains liquid helium and whose inner annular space contains a helium coil 15 supported on insulating material 16 within the helical groove 14 cut in solid inner metal core 61, the electron beam 2 passing adjacent the coil 15 through a passage 18 in the walls 17 of the groove.
