Abstract

1,084,889. Gas turbine plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 9, 1965 [July 13, 1964], No. 29181/65. Heading F1G. [Also in Division F4] A gas turbine engine having a turbine 14 driving an axial-flow compressor 12 and a separate power turbine 16 has heat exchanger tubes 31 mounted in the annular exhaust passage 23 so as to pre-heat combustion air flowing from the compressor to the combustion chamber 13. The tubes 31 are supported by outer and inner toroidal compressed air headers 35, 36 respectively. Header 36 is rigidly supported by circumferentially spaced preheated air ducts 47 from a toroidal air casing 37 whilst header 35 is supported from header 36 by a flexible cylindrical member 50 restraining relative axial movement between the headers but allowing radial movement. Circumferentially spaced ducts 48, each including a flexible bellows 49, conduct unheated air from casing 37 to header 35 but do not support the header. The exhaust gases leave the pre-heater through a nozzle 22. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate modified arrangements for supporting the outer header from the inner header, including respectively a flexible V-section annular member (72) and tie rods (84). In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a valve (61) is provided such that with the valve in the open position some of the exhaust gases by-pass the pre-heater and flow directly to an exhaust nozzle (64).
