Abstract

1,087,300. Colour television distribution system. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd. Dec. 2, 1964 [Dec. 5, 1963], No. 48077/63. Heading H4R. A transmitter for a colour television distribution system applies to the system a modulated carrier wave brightness information component and a suppressed carrier colour information component in which the carrier frequencies differ one from the other by an odd multiple of half the line scan frequency and the frequency of the brightness information component carrier is a whole multiple of the line scan frequency plus or minus an odd multiple of one quarter the frame scan frequency. The system ensures that beats of the carriers or their harmonics of about an even multiple of the line scan frequency differ in frequency by an odd multiple of half the frame scan frequency so that the effect on the reproduced picture is minimal. Alternative programmes may be distributed over separate pairs of conductors in the network, the carrier frequencies differing by a few kc./s. or, if the isolation between the pairs is sufficient, they may be substantially identical. The brightness information signal, which include colour bursts and synchronizing signals, and suppressed carrier wave colour signals may be extracted from broadcast signals and applied to the wired distribution system via a balanced modulator fed with a carrier from an oscillator having an oven-controlled crystal. If the system is applied to a 625 line NTSC system, the carrier frequency may be 5406À2625 kc./s. with a suppressed carrier frequency for the colour information at about 9830 kc./s. A receiver of conventional type for NTSC transmissions is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown).
