Abstract

1,090,828. Measuring skid resistance. PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY. Jan. 5, 1965 [Jan. 6, 1964], No.410/65. Heading G1S. In apparatus for measuring skid or slip resistance of a surface 60, a friction shoe 8 is pivotally supported on a connector 5, which is fixed to a slidably mounted shaft 3 and vertically orientated by a second shaft 55 along which the connector 5 may slide. The shaft 3 is connected to a hydraulic piston 11 forming one wall of a hydraulic chamber 14 connected through a channel 17 and hose 18 to a pressure gauge 21. The shoe 8 is loaded by a spring 7 to press against the surface under test. A temperature compensating chamber 23 (see Fig. 2, not shown) is provided for the hydraulic chamber 14 and has an outlet at 22 closed by a screwed plug which may be moved to alter the volume of the chamber 23. An increased static load may be applied to the housing by increasing the ballast 58. The apparatus is pivotally mounted on a trolley including wheels 37 and a handle 36. In use, the apparatus is wheeled along the surface, the resistance of the friction shoe causing changes in pressure in the chamber 14 due to movement of shaft 3 and piston 11. These pressure changes being transmitted through channel 17 and hose 18 to the gauge 21. The friction shoe may be made of rubber, metal or other suitable material dependant on’the surface under test.
