Abstract
Shaped articles are made by reacting together in a shaping process: (a) a polyaddition product of an amino- and/or hydroxyl group-containing compound having a molecular weight of 600-10,000 and a polyisocyanate and, if desired, a chain lengthening agent having a molecular weight below 600, (b) 1-200% by weight, based on the polyaddition product, of a polyisocyanate having a molecular weight up to 20,000, (c) a graft copolymer consisting of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate containing 25-75% of the latter, 10-80% of the ester groups having been saponified, and on to which has been grafted vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride, the grafted monomers making up 30-90% by weight of the final product and, if desired, (d) a further compound which is reactive with isocyanates. The use of the following ingredients is described:-polyaddition products: poly – (hexanediol – dimethylpropanediol adipate), poly – (diethylene glycol adipate), poly – (ethylene glycol adipate), poly – (ethylene glycol – butylene glycol adipate), poly – (butylene glycol), poly-(butylene – glycol) – bis – (N,N – methylurethane), an OH-terminated polysiloxane; chain-lengthening agents: butanediol and trimethylolpropane; polyisocyanates: hexamethylene, toluylene and diphenylmethane diisocyanates, biuret triisocyanate, triphenylmethane triisocyanate, tri – (4 – isocyanatophenyl) thiophosphate, the addition product of trimethylolpropane and 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate and the phosgenation product of an aniline-formaldehyde condensate; and graft polymers: products obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride and mixtures thereof with (a) vinyl acetate and monopropyl maleate, and (b) monopropyl and monododecyl maleates in aqueous suspension in the presence of partially saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. The components may be mixed on a roller or in a kneader and then thermoplastically formed, or may be dissolved in a solvent and applied to substrates on which the reaction between the components takes place.ALSO:Sheet materials, e.g. textiles, leather, paper and plastics are coated by applying thereto and reacting thereon (a) a polyaddition product of an amino and/or hydroxyl group-containing compound, (b) a polyisocyanate having a molecular weight up to 20,000, (c) a graft copolymer of vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride on a partially saponified ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and, optionally (d) a further compound reactive with isocyanates (see Division C3). The coating materials as a solution are applied to the substrates by doctor blades or by spraying. A plurality of coatings may be applied to the substrates, which, before coating, may be primed, e.g. with an aqueous butadiene copolymer dispersion. The Examples describe coating nylon fleeces and fabrics, cotton fabric, leather and a polyvinyl chloride foil.
