Abstract

1,091,460. Ball studs. MOOG INDUSTRIES INC. Oct. 18, 1966 [May 16, 1965], No. 46600/66. Heading E2F. [Also in Division F2] A ball stud comprises a spherical head portion 20 having a substantially radiallyextending opening 26 terminating at its radially inner end in a substantially outwardly flaring annular chamber and a shank portion 24 having an annular end 50 which is mounted in, and has been deformed under pressure into contact with, the annular chamber and retained therein against withdrawal. As shown in Fig. 1, the chamber may be defined by radially outwardly flaring wall 30 and 40 of the opening and of an insert 22 received within the opening. The annular end 50 has been deformed in that diametral plane 48 of the spherical head which is normal to the longitudinal axis of opening 26. In another embodiment, the insert is eliminated and the chamber is cut from the spherical ball head. The annular shank end 50 is urged into the chamber by a hydraulic press and is cold welded to the wall of the chamber by the pressure of deformation. The spherical head preferably has a hardened case 21 and a relatively softer core, the opening extending through a flat portion 34 exposing the core. The spherical head portion and shank portions may be formed of different materials.
