Abstract
1,095,004. Ice-making. GENERAL FOODS CORPORATION. June 23, 1965, No.26686/65. Heading F4H. A carbon dioxide hydrate is obtained by contacting a film of an aqueous liquid maintained at between – 3‹ and 10‹ C. with carbon dioxide gas under pressure, and allowing the dissolved carbon dioxide to react with the aqueous liquid to form the hydrate. The resultant liquid/hydrate slush may be transferred to a freezing zone where the liquid in the slush is frozen at less than – 3‹ C., or the hydrate may be separated from the liquid and stored at less than 0‹ C. The process may be performed in the illustrated apparatus in which carbon dioxide gas from line 28 and water from line 26 are combined in line 30 and supplied to a heat exchanger 10. Wipers 50 form the water into a film on wall 12 and the film is maintained at the desired temperature by a refrigerant jacket 14. The water/hydrate slush is transferred from the heat exchanger to moulds 18 in a propylene glycol freezing bath via a line 22 which contains a throttling valve 20 for maintaining a constant pressure in heat exchanger 10. The aqueous liquid may alternatively be whole or skimmed milk, fruit or vegetable juices, coffee, tea, nectar extracts or ice cream. Examples of operating pressures and flow rates are given. Part of the liquid may be removed from the liquid/hydrate slush before freezing.
