Abstract
1,105,095. Heating & cooling buildings; heat pumps. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 22 Oct., 1965 [26 Oct., 1964], No. 44754/65. Headings F4H and F4U. A heating and cooling system for a multiroom building comprises a plurality of room units each consisting of a refrigerant condenser 13, a refrigerant evaporator (not shown) in heat exchange relation with a stream of room air, a heating coil 31 positioned downstream of the evaporator in said room air stream and a valve 23 by means of which water from a supply line 21 may be supplied either to the condenser 13 or coil 31. Water from the units is returned through line 29 and pump 41 to a valve 43 which regulates the relative proportion of water passing to a boiler 45 and a by-pass line 47, the water from the by-pass line and/or the boiler then passing to a valve 51 which regulates the relative proportion passing to a cooling coil 55 and through a by-pass line to supply line 21. As shown the units are grouped into an exterior zone and an interior zone and the temperature of the water supplied through line 21 is regulated in accordance with the outside temperature by a controller 65 which regulates valves 43 and 51. Thus when the outdoor temperature is at or below 40 F., water at 130 F. is supplied through line 21, valves 71 and 73 are positioned to connect the units of the exterior zone in parallel with those of the interior zone and the valves 23 of all of the units are positioned by room thermostats 33 to direct hot water to coils 31. The refrigerator systems are inoperative, all of the return water is heated in boiler 45 and cooling coil 55 is by-passed. At outside temperature of 50 F. the supply water is at 120 F., the exterior zone units are on heating and valves 71 and 73 are positioned to connect the units of the two zones in series, the water from the exterior zone unit being at a suitable temperature for providing either moderate heating or condenser cooling, as desired, in the interior zone units. At outside temperatures of 60 F. supply water at 110 F. provides moderate heating in the exterior zone and is then used to cool the interior zone condensers where it picks up sufficient heat to enable the boiler to be by-passed. At outside temperatures of 70 F. the supply water is at 100 F., valves 71 and 73 are positioned to connect the units in parallel some of the exterior units are on cooling and some on heating, all of the interior zone units are on cooling, the boiler is by-passed and some of the heat picked up from the condensers is dissipated in coil 55. At outside temperatures of 80 F. and above all units are on cooling and all of the water is passed through cooling coil 55 the cooling effect of which is now increased by providing water sprays, evaporative surfaces &c. in addition to air cooling by fan 57. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the units are provided with on/off valves (75) which when closed direct water from the condenser to the heating coil so that the latter reheats air which has been cooled and dehumidified by the evaporator.
