Abstract
1,105,395. Automatically adjustable railway vehicle brake. SVENSKA A.B. BROMS REGULATOR 6 Sept 1966, No. 39672/66. Heading F2E. A railway vehicle, wheel, brake unit;comprising a. housing I a brake lever 2 pivoted to the housing, a brake shoe 7 connected to the lever a piston connected at 4 to the lever to apply the brake, a return spring 29 for moving the lever to release the brake, has the brake shoe connected to the lever by an automatic slackadjusting device comprising air axially movabe threaded spindle 11 connected at one end to the shoe, nuts 12, 13 mounted for rotation on the spindle and spring loaded away from the shoe, a sleeve 14 pivotally connected to the brake lever and surrounding the spindle and presenting an internal flange 17 extending between and capable of engaging the said two nuts, a locking ring 21 for engaging and limiting movement in the direction away from the brake shoe of, that one 13 of the nuts more remote from the shoe, the sleeve and locking ring being arranged to move axially relatively to the housing during application and release of the brake, the possible axial movement of the locking ring relatively to the housing being limited and smaller than that of the sleeve. On application of the brake with normal slack lever 2 moves anti-clockwise to move collar 15, sleeve 14 and, through clutch a-a the nut 12 spindle 11 and brake shoe 7. If the slack is too great however the distance A is taken up before the end of the piston movement and further leftward movement of the locking ring is prevented, disengaging clutches b-b and c-c, the spring 22 causing nut 13 to rotate on the moving spindle until c-c is re-engaged at the end of the stroke. The gap then existing between surfaces b-b represents the required adjustment and is taken up on the release stroke of the piston as spring 29 returns level 2, the nut 12 spinning, as clutch a-a is then opened, until the movement of sleeve 14 is terminated by flange 17 engaging nut 13 to engage clutch b-b. Manual adjustment of the nuts 12, 13 is possible by rotating the slotted sleeve 14a which engages the sleeve 14 and lugs 25 on the looking ring 21. A hand brakeoperated lever 30 is also provided. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the locking ring is rigidly fixed to a sleeve having a cover and which extends within a cylinder element secured to the cover. The Clearance A is provided between the edge of the cover and a split ring positioned within the cylinder element.
