Abstract

1,105,411. Spark erosion. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 3 Sept., 1965 [7 Sept., 1964], No. 36578/64. Heading B3V. In a spark erosion process, a resilient electrode 16 is oscillated normal to the surface of the workpiece 14. The latter may be a vacuumevaporated metallic film 13 on a substrate such as glass 14, used as an electric circuit element. Electrode 16 is a tungsten wire welded into a piezo-electric transducer element 17 which is vibrated by a square-wave generator 19 with the same frequency as the sparking frequency. Sparks of low power are produced by a relaxation circuit consisting of a high resistance 24 and low capacitance 25. The workpiece is preferably immersed in a dielectric fluid 12, but the sparking may be performed in air. The transducer 17 is movable vertically by a rack 22 and can be traversed horizontally in two directions by screws 23.
