Abstract
1,105,629. Screw-and-nut mechanism; valves. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 4 July, 1966 [4 Aug., 1965; 15 Sept., 1965], Nos. 33302/65 and 39339/65. Headings F2Q and F2V. A valve stem 4 may be moved axially either by rotation of a hand wheel or by two independently controlled power means. The mechanism includes epicyclic gearing, one sun wheel 16 of which has a screw-threaded connection 17 with a screw-thread 18 on the valve stem 4, and another sun wheel 20 of whioh has a screw-thread 21 engaging a screw-thread 22 in a fixed housing part 23, the screw-threads 18, 21 being of opposite hand. The sun wheel 20 has one more tooth than the sun wheel 16 and they engage three planet gears 14 mounted in a carrier 13 which has an externally-toothed periphery 12 engaged by a pinion 11 on a shaft 10 of a reversible electric or pneumatic motor 9. A collar 31 is attached to the sun wheel 20 and carries an arm 30 which engages a pin 33 attached to the piston of a double-acting piston-andcylinder arrangement 32 which is operated by compressed-air. Rotation of the valve stem 4 is prevented during power operation of the mechanism by means of a spring-pressed tooth 37 engaging a slot carried by the valve stem 4. On operation of the power means 32 and motor 9, sun wheel 20 is rotated and by means of the screw threads 21, 22 the valve stem 4 is moved axially. When the collar 31 abuts the lower end of housing part 23, further rotation of sun wheel 20 is prevented and relatively slow rotation of sun wheel 16, through the epicyclic gearing, effects continued axial movement of the valve stem 4, by virtue of the screw threads 17, 18. In a modification, shown in the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification 39339/65, initial axial movement of the valve stem 4 is effected by rotation of a threaded sleeve 21, engaging a fixed portion 23, by operation of a double-acting piston -and-cylinder arrangement 32. Subsequently, axial movement is also effected by rotation of a nut 116 by means of a motor 9 through reduction gearing 13, 14. In a further modification the motor 9 drives the nut 116 direct.
