Abstract

A foamable composition comprises at least one polymerizable compound containing dihydropyranyl groups linked by ester groups, at least one polymerizable compound which is the aldol condensation product of a dihydropyranaldehyde, a volatile foaming agent and a catalyst. One or more substances reactive with or copolymerizable with the dihydropyranyl derivatives may also be present. Preferred dihydropyranyl derivatives are 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran – 2 – methyl 3,4 – dihydro – 2H – pyran-2-carboxylate, and and the trimeric aldol condensation products of 2 – formyl – 3,4 – dihydro – 2H – pyran, e.g. Exemplified catalysts are BF3, used as the etherate or dihydrate, a mixture of fluoboric acid with a little fluosilicic acid, 1-toluene sulphonic acid and dibutyltindilaurate, many others being specified. The preferred foaming agent is CFCl3. Included in various examples as substances reactive with or copolymerizable with the dihydropyranyl derivatives, and which are said to add resilience to the resulting foams, are diphenylmethane – 4,41 – diisocyanate, diethylene glycol, diglyceryltetrachlorophthalate, styrene, diallyl and dimethyl phthalates, pentachlorophenol, 2,2 – di – p – hydroxyphenyl-propane or a low molecular weight condensate of this with epichlorhydrin, polypropylene glycols, various polyether alcohols of molecular weight 350-2800, polyproxylated sugars, castor oil, a p-t-butylphenol formaldehyde resin and a methylated melamine resin. Chlorendic anhydride and tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate may serve this purpose and also act as flame retardants. A surface active agent, e.g. a siloxane oxyalkylene copolymer is preferably included in the foaming composition.
