Abstract

1,108,020. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 15 Oct., 1965 [30 Oct., 1964], No. 44461/64. Heading G6C. [Also in Division F2] A fuel element assembly includes two subassemblies attached together in end-to-end relationship by a releasable coupling comprising two interengaging members, the engagement of which is disengageably secured by a locking member, and differentially thermally expanding securing means for resisting disengagement of the locking member from the interengaging members under operational conditions in a nuclear reactor. One such assembly comprises a non-fissile sub-assembly and a fuel-bearing sub-assembly. The non-fissile sub-assembly includes a seal plug for closing an upper access opening of a reactor fuel channel and a neutron shield plug which is carried below the seal plug by a tubular member. The fuel-bearing subassembly includes a cluster of spaced parallel, end-supported fuel rods. The releasable coupling 8 connecting the two sub-assemblies comprises, as shown in Fig. 2, a shaft 9 and a sleeve 11 having interengaging splines arranged so that the shaft 9 can be engaged by the sleeve 11 by relative longitudinally axial movement and secured against longitudinally axial disengagement by limited angular movement. The looking member comprises a splined locking collar 13 longitudinally slidable on the shaft 9 and having longitudinally axial projections 34 for engagement with complementary recesses in the sleeve 11 so as to prevent further relative angular movement of the sleeve 11 and the shaft 9 when these are longitudinally axially and angularly engaged. A spring 35 interposed between the end of the shield plug 4 and a flange 36 on the collar 13 urges the projections 34 into engagement with the recesses in the sleeve 11. The shaft 9 is of a material, e.g. 18/8 stainless steel, having a higher coefficient of linear thermal expansion than the material, e.g. stainless iron, of the collar 13 to provide the differentially thermally expanding securing means. the diametral dimension over the splines of the shaft 9 and the complementary dimension of the collar 13 are such that there is a clearance fit at atmospheric temperature and an interference fit at the operating temperature of the fuel element channel. The sleeve 11 is also of stainless iron and has proportions relative to the shaft 9 such that at atmospheric temperature the shaft 9 and the sleeve 11 are relatively freely sliding to effect engagement of the coupling while at the operating temperature the sleeve 11 makes an interference fit with the shaft 9. These interference fits of the collar 13 and sleeve 11 with the shaft 9 provide additional locking means whereby disconnection of the coupling by coolant and vibration is resisted.
