Abstract

1,112,052. Emptying storage chambers from below; screw conveyers. A. O. SMITH HARVESTORE PRODUCTS Inc. 18 June, 1965 [19 June, 1964], No. 25934/65. Headings B8A and B8E. Apparatus for the bottom unloading of a storage structure 1, Fig. 1, comprises an auger 8 extending over the base 3 of the structure from a drive transmission unit 12 which is adapted to rotate the auger about the vertical axis of the structure 1 and about its own axis for moving the stored material to the centre of the structure and into a trough 7, and a pair of laterally spaced discharge augers 5, 6, Fig. 3, mounted in the trough for moving the material to a discharge spout 15. The drive of the auger 8 is separate from that of the augers 5, 6 so that the speeds of the augers may be selected to suit the material being handled. The structure 1 has a circular wall 2 formed of wood or glass-lined metal and the base 3 is of concrete. The augers 5, 6 extend from the trough 7 through tubes 13, 14 leading to the spout 15 and having spring-loaded relief doors 16 on the sides thereof. A member (19), Fig. 5 (not shown), extends between the augers 5, 6 in the trough 7 to provide separate auger chambers (23) aligned with the tubes 13, 14, the chambers (23) being covered by plates 25 defining openings 28, 29 leading to the chambers. The outer end of the auger 8, during rotation of the latter, bears on the base 3 and on a plate 30 spanning the space between the plates 25. The transmission unit 12 comprises a lower fixed gearbox 44 and a rotatable turret 46, and the auger 8 is mounted to provide reaction forces tending to turn the turret, which forces are increased by an arcuate plate 46a secured to the outermost end of the auger 8 so that it engages the base 3 during each revolution of the auger about its own axis. The auger 8 is driven by a motor 11 through a belt drive 82, a gear unit (80), Fig. 2 (not shown), a chain drive (81), and transmission shafts (37), 36, 35, the latter shaft 35 being connected to gearing in the box 44 of the transmission unit 12. The motor 11 is pivotally mounted at (84), Fig. 4 (not shown), and the tension in the belt drive 82 is variable by adjusting studs 85 to obtain the required speed of the auger 8. The augers 5, 6 are driven by a motor 10 through a variable speed belt drive 74 adjustable by a hand wheel 77, and a gear unit 71 driving the shaft (66) of the auger 6, the shaft (66) being connected to a similar shaft of the auger 5 by a chain drive 69. The shaft of the auger 5 has a square end 99 for manual operation. The augers 5, 6 are each in two sections, the innermost section having the spacings of the flights 48 thereof less than that of the other section.
