Abstract
1,112,181. Power hammers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 4 Nov., 1964 [5 Nov., 1963], No. 43727/63. Heading B3H. An impact forming machine has two opposed platens 12, 13 interconnected for synchronous operation. The platens carry dies 23 and are actuated by pistons 18 in cylinders 21 to which pressure air is admitted. Piston heads 19 seal against rings 22 in the cylinder heads whereby the pistons are retained in their outer positions. To effect the forming stroke, compressed air is admitted through duets 29 to break the seals whereby the pressure in cylinders 21 acting differentially on the pistons, causes rapid inward movement thereof. To ensure synchronous operation, the two platens carry auxiliary pistons (31), (38), Fig. 5 (not shown), interconnected by hydraulic links. A valve (9), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the links may be used to lock the platens and other valves (10), (11) are used to effect inching movement thereof. Alternatively the platens may be interconnected by mechanical linkage and the pistons may be operated by an explosive mixture as described in Specification 1,112,182.
