Abstract

1,113,983. Digital position control. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. 19 May, 1965 [13 March, 1964], No. 49367/63. Heading G4H. A positioning system comprises a rotor for driving an output shaft through a clutch, a pulse generator 4 and a counter 5-8 giving a signal representing the shaft position, a comparator for comparing the signal with a desired position signal and a clutch control member which disengages the clutch when the difference between the signals is less than a given amount. A reversible motor 1, drives the output shaft through gearing 2. The generator 4 produces a pulse for each rotation or part of rotation of the output shaft and the pulses are counted in binary counting stages 5-8. The desired position is stored in binary form in unit 9 and appears on leads 10-13. Each digit is compared by diodes 14, 19 &c. with the corresponding digit from the counter. Equality is indicated when all four inputs to gate 18 are » 0,» the output of the gate then causing control 27 to open contact 28 and disengage the clutch 3. The direction of the driving motor is controlled by unit 29 receiving the desired and actual position signals through weighted resistors. The direction is determined by comparing the two values, unit 38 setting relay 39 according to the required direction. The output from unit 29 is also applied to speed-control unit 41 to determine the speed of the motor in accordance with the amount of the difference between desired and actual positions.
