Abstract

1, 114, 934. Cooling engine cylinders; axial-flow fans. DYNAIR Ltd. May 25, 1966 [May 28, 1965], No.22861/65. Headings F1B and F1C. [Also in Division G3] A water-cooled engine 11 (Fig. 1) is connected to a radiator 12 by conduits 13, 14 and drives a variable pitch cooling fan having blades 10 and a pitch-adjusting servomotor 15, the latter being connected to a pressure or vacuum source 18 via a temperature-responsive valve 17 mounted in conduit 14. The fan (Fig. 2) has a hub 25 provided with six radial arms 26 in the form of hollow tubular spigots the latter being surrounded by bushes 30 to which the blades 28 are attached at 39, 40. U-shaped torsion springs 33 are attached at 36 to the hub and at 34 to the blades and urge the latter to a zero pitch position. A disc 37 is fixed to the hub to retain the ends of the springs in position. The servomotor comprises an axially fixed piston 45, 46 and a movable cylinder 47 connected to the blades to adjust their pitch via links 50 pivoted at 51 to the cylinder and at 52 to parts 31 of the blades. A fixed conduit 16, 56 enters the cylinder 47 to supply the latter with fluid from valve 17. In Fig. 5 (not shown), a thermally operated switch (20) in line (14) controls a valve (19) in the line between servomotor (15) and power source (18). In Fig.6 (not shown), a valve (60) responds to fan speed to reduce the air-pressure supplied to the valve (17) at high rotational speeds. In a further alternative embodiment, valve 17 is replaced by a valve mounted on stem 56 and operated by a bimetallic member responsive to the temperature of the air passing through the radiator. The links 50 may be replaced by a mechanism comprising an axially movable annular plate having a bayonet joint connection with the servomotor cylinder and co-operating with nylon blocks attached to arms connected to the fan blades. The fan may also be moved with air-cooled engines.
