Abstract
A monomer or a mixture of monomers chosen from (a) one or more monomers with an oxiran ring (b) one or more monomers with conjugated diolefinic unsaturation (c) one or more monomers with conjugated diolefinic unsaturation together with one or more copolymerizable monomers having olefinic unsaturation or an oxiran ring, may be polymerized in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising an iron (III) compound, a hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbyloxy or hydride compound of aluminium, and an organo-phosphorus compound in which a phosphorus atom is linked to at least one hydrogen atom (see Division B1). Examples relate to polymerization of ethylene oxide; propylene oxide; 1,3-butadiene+propylene oxide; 1,3-butadiene+ethylene oxide; 1,3 – butadiene+propylene; 1,3 – butadiene +acrylonitrile; 1,3-butadiene + ethylene; acrylonitrile + styrene + 1,3 – butadiene; 1,3 – butadiene.ALSO:A phosphorus-containing complex is obtained by reacting (a) a ferric iron compound, (b) a hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbyloxy or hydride compound of aluminium, and (c) an organophosphorus compound in which a phosphorus atom is linked directly to at least one hydrogen atom. Iron compound (a) may be an inorganic or organic salt or a derivative of alcohols, ketones, aldehydes or nitrogen-containing organic compounds. The aluminium compound (b) preferably has general formula (R2)Al-A where R is alkyl, A is alkyl, alkoxy or hydride. The organo phosphorus compound (c) preferably has general formula
