Abstract
1,128,061. Filters for liquids. M.E.L. EQUIPMENT, CO. Ltd. 14 April, 1966 [21 May, 1965], No. 21618/65. Heading B1D. In apparatus of the kind in which filtration occurs through a portion of a strip of filter medium located over a perforate portion of a tank bottom, and the strip is moved automatically on attainment of a predetermined level of unfiltered liquid owing to accumulation of residue upon the strip, the filtrate is received in a suction chamber beneath the tank; preferably there is included a valve, operated by a solenoid in the controlling electric circuit, for relieving the vacuum normally existing in the suction chamber. This valve is opened to admit liquid (e.g. filtered liquid) or air to the suction chamber during a specified interval before the filter-medium operating mechanism is started, so that movement of the medium is not impeded. As shown, paper, cloth or the like 6 from a roll 7 is located by conveyer 11 having transverse flight bars (not shown) on a perforated plate 4 at the bottom of a tank 1. Suction is applied to a chamber 3 by a centrifugal pump 5. When a float-operated switch 26 is closed by rise of liquid level, the following sequence takes place: (a) the vacuumrelieving valve (not shown) is opened and pump 5 is stooped; (b) after a delay of, e.g., three seconds a motor 18, driving conveyer 11 and rollers 9, 10 and 23, is started, to remove and replace the soiled portion of strip 6 on plate 4; (c) after a predetermined time, e.g. 7 seconds, the vacuum-relieving valve is closed, the conveyer is stopped and pump 5 restarted; (d) switch 26 opens, restoring the circuit to its normal condition. In the filtration of high-viscosity liquids, the vacuum-relieving valve admits liquid from a filtrate tank 2. In the filtration of lowviscosity liquids, pump 5 remains in operation while the valve admits filtrate from tank 2, when a continuous supply of clean liquid is required. Where an intermittent supply of low-viscosity liquid is permissible, pump 5 is stopped and the valve admits air. The float-operated switch may be replaced by a pressure-operated switch or by a relay device operated by one electrode and the tank or by two electrodes.
