Abstract
1,128,589. Reactor control rods. COMMISSARIAT A L’ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 29 Aug., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 39481/67. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor control rod comprises a tubular structure in which are housed a plurality of fuel elements and at least one tubular casing supporting a plurality of cobalt plates. The cobalt plates serve the dual function of neutron absorption and the production of radioelements. As shown in Fig. 1, the tubular structure 1 is of square cross-section and comprises lower and upper end connectors 2, 3 between which extend two side plates 4 and two distance plates 5 which are inset between the side plates 4. Plate-type fuel elements 6 are fitted in the structure 1 adjacent the lower end connector 2, and two casings 7a, 7b are mounted above the fuel elements. Each casing contains a plurality of small cobalt plates 8, each clad with stainless steel or other suitable corrosion-resistant material, and each casing comprises an inner and an outer element of square cross-section which are provided with coolant apertures and also means whereby they can be assembled temporarily so as to form between them an annular space capable of accommodating the cobalt plates 8. The casings 7a, 7b are maintained within the structure 1 by means of a clamping plug 9, one portion 9a of which is in the form of a spring. The plug 9 is attached by means of screws (not shown) to the upper end connector 3 which is, in turn, attached to the side plates 4 by means of two threaded rods 11 co-operating with tubular nuts (not shown). This arrangement facilitates the loading and unloading of the cobalt plates 8. Such control rods are particularly suitable for use with reactors of the swimming-pool type.
