Abstract

1,132,989. Testing with magnetic tapes. AGFA GEVAERT A.G. 8 Dec., 1965 [8 Dec., 1964], No. 52118/65. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H1] A magnetic tape 5, preferably one made as described in Division H1, in which the magnetic layer 4 consists of acicular particles of CrO 2 aligned along the direction 13, is laid on a testpiece 1 along which a field Hf is exerted. At a fault 3, the fringe field is recorded in the tape. The vertical components H StS relate to the fault 3, while the horizontal components H StL may be partly due to the fault but are mainly due to direct magnetization by the test field Hp. While this is much greater than H StS , the orientation of the particles in the tape prevents the component H StL from saturating the tape. The tape is then spliced into a loop and played back on a tape recorder at audio playback speed. The fault 3 is then adjudged orally by loud-speaker or measured with a valve voltmeter or other measuring instrument.
