Abstract
1,135,293. Fuel oil. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 26 Aug., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 38448/66. Heading C5E. A process for the preparation of fuel oil having a low sulphur content comprises the steps of contacting a feedstock which is a heavy whole crude, atmospheric residuum, vacuum residuum, visbreaker bottoms, deasphalted oil or refinery cycle stock with liquid hydrogen fluoride, separating a raffinate from an extract rich in hydrogen fluoride, separating hydrogen fluoride from the extract, coking the hydrogen fluoride-free extract, separating light hydrocarbons from the coker product and catalytically hydrodesulphurizing the remaining coker product. The raffinate from the HF extraction, freed from HF, may be blended with the product or added to the feed to the desulphurizing stage. Catalysts may be molybdena on alumina optionally with cobalt oxide, or may contain nickel, chromic, platinum or tungsten as metals, oxides or sulphides on alumina, charcoal, kieselguhr or bauxite.
