Abstract
1,137,975. Sprayed polyurethane foams. JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 15 April, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 16751/66. Headings C3C and C3R. Sprayed polyurethane foams are prepared by feeding into a mixing sprayer, a polyisocyanate, a polyol, a blowing agent, an organometallic catalyst and a foam stabilizer, and ejecting the resulting mixture on to a surface to be coated with the foam, the polyol comprising 10 to 100 wt. per cent of a nitrogencontaining polyol having an OH No. of 350 to 900 and a nitrogen content of 1 to 15 wt. per cent, the nitrogen being present as tertiary nitrogen in the form of one to three N-disubstituted aminomethyl groups attached to an aromatic nucleus to which is also attached at least substituent which is an hydroxy or hydroxyalkoxy group derived from propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide, styrene oxide and glycidol, at least one of the substituents attached to the nitrogen of the aminomethyl group containing one or two primary or secondary hydroxyl groups, and correspondingly 90 to 0 wt. per cent of a conventional polyol. The nitrogen containing polyols are Mannich condensation products of a phenolic compound, an alkanolamine and formaldehyde and alkylene oxide adducts of these condensation products, and are described in U.K Patent Specification 1,002,272. The preferred polyisocyanate is a polymethylene poly-(4-phenylisocyanate) and the conventional polyol may be a polyether or polyester. A two component system is preferably employed to form the foam, one component comprising the polyisocyanate and the other the polyol, blowing agent, foam stabilizer and catalyst. The two components are pumped to an internally mixed spray gun fitted with an air atomization nozzle and the mixture sprayed through the nozzle.
