Abstract
1,147,398. Variable-ratio gears. G. B. BOUCHERIE. 17 April, 1967 [20 Oct., 1966], No. 17536/67. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B3] A shaft is driven in the steps (to similarly drive a workpiece or tool) by two oppositely directed ratchet wheels 2, 3 selectively driven by pawls 12, 13 the throw of which is varied under the control of punched tape. The pawls 12, 13 are pivoted on levers 4, 5 which are pivoted about the axis 1 of the shaft. Connecting arms 20, 21 are pivoted at 18, 19 to the pawls and have cross pieces 22, 23 with holes 24-33 which, in the neutral position of the operating mechanism are aligned with pins 42-51 slidable in levers 34, 35 which are oscillated by cams. Plates 65, 66, 68 are secured together and slidably mounted in the frame of the machine. Plate 68 has pins fast therewith, and plate 65 has pins 70-79 slidably mounted therein and biased towards the pins 47-51 by springs 81. A punched tape 54 is positioned between the plate 65 and levers 34, 35 and, on the plates being shifted upwardly (as shown in Fig. 2) prevents all save a selected one of the pins 70-79 from engaging the pins of the lever 34 or 35. The selected pin passes through a hole in the tape and engages the corresponding pin in the lever 34, 35 and shifts it to engage the corresponding hole in the cross-piece 22 or 23. Rocking of the lever 34 or 35 then causes the shaft to be stepped in the appropriate direction by 1 to 4 steps according as holes 24-28 or 29-33 are engaged by the corresponding pins. When the levers return to their neutral positions, the plates 65, 66, 68 are shifted downwardly, and a pin on the plate 68 returns the selected pin to its neutral position. The tape is then shifted to its next position ready for another cycle.
