Abstract

1,149,430. Coke ovens. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 10 Jan., 1967 [18 Jan., 1966], No. 1396/67. Heading F4B. In a regeneratively heated coke oven battery of the Becker type in which crossover flues 26 connect sets of heating flues 20 through headers 24, each heating flue 20 has a lean gas port 58, a rich gas port 56 and an air port 60 in its floor (46), Fig. 1 (not shown) and a lean gas port 54 and rich gas port 52 in the top wall 50 of a laterally extending protuberance. Control of the various supply ducts and connections is such that the lean gas ports are used for air when firing with rich gas, and excess air is supplied through port 60 only when firing with lean gas. A rich gas main 74 running longitudinally below the regenerators 28, 30 supplies the high ports 52 through branches 78 and underjet ducts 92, 94 and supplies low ports 56 through branches 80 and underjet ducts 86. Waste gas induction ducts 90 connect «on» and «off’ rich gas ducts 92, 94 for recirculation of a proportion of the waste gases with incoming rich gas. Ducts 86 are connected through controls 88 with an air duct 82, air being supplied during «off» periods. When an oven is operating on lean gas, «on» regenerator 30 and the other middle regenerator will be supplying lean gas to ports 54 and 58 through ducts 62, 64, and regenerator 28 will be supplying an excess of air to the port 60 through duct 70. Lower ports 58 and upper ports 54 are sized to supply 30% and 70% respectively of the lean gas. Ports 54, 58 and 60 may be equipped with regulating devices.
