Abstract
1,149,845. Photo-electric line followers. SENECA FALLS MACHINE CO. April 19, 1966 [April 19, 1965], No.17182/66. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G3] A photo-electric line or edge follower comprises a rotary optical scanner generating control signals in response to its field of view crossing the line or edge, means driven by the scanner to generate a signal of frequency representative of the rotary scanner speed and gating means to which are applied the frequency signal and the control signals to produce a signal for driving the scanner along the line or edge. The line or edge is scanned by a rotating scanning aperture 21 driven by an induction motor 33. The pulse output from the photo-multiplier 50 is fed via a selector switch 57 for light on dark or dark on light lines and a shaping trigger circuit 60 to a first flip-flop 62. The reset time of flip-flop 62 is adjusted so that it is sensitive to the pulses generated when the line is scanned in a forward direction, but not in a backward direction. Setting of flip-flop 62 also sets flip-flop 67, which resets after about 180 degrees of the scanner’s rotation. Flip-flop 67 produces complementary squarewave signals on leads 72 and 73 the phase of which depends upon the point in the scanning cycle when the line is detected. A generator 33 produces quadrature signals synchronized with the scanner rotation. These signals are applied in positive and negative polarity to diode switches 77 and 80, where they are gated by the squarewaves from flip-flop 67 to give signals which after smoothing by filters 85 comprise the drive to X and Y servomotors. If A.C. servomotors are used, modulators 83, 84 are provided to produce the A.C. drive signals. The invention may be used to control milling, routing, sewing, flame cutting and welding machinery.
